Guardian Program
A Guardian home for a breeding dog is a living arrangement where a puppy or dog is placed with a family or individual who will care for the dog as a pet, while the breeder retains ownership. The dog is then brought back to the breeder a specific number of times to be bred and raise puppies, but otherwise lives in a loving, family-oriented environment. This arrangement helps ensure that the dog has a high quality of life, and that the breeder can continue their breeding program while ensuring every dog is getting all the love and attention they deserve, and living their best life without overcrowding in the breeder's home. It also ensures the breeder never has to rehome a retired breeding dog to continue their program. After a set number of breeding cycles, a dog in a Guardian home will be retired and can remain a pampered pet with the Guardian family permanently. Once the dog is spayed or nuetered, ownership can be transfered over to the Guardian family. Being a Guardian home for a dog in a breeding program offers several benefits. First, you get to care for a high-quality dog without the upfront cost of purchasing a puppy. Additionally, you will receive guidance and support from the breeder to help ensure the best possible care for the dog. The dog lives with you as a family pet, and you’re involved in a responsible and ethical breeding program. Once the dog’s breeding career is over, you can keep the dog permanently as part of your family, making it a rewarding and cost-effective experience. There are also some important responsibilities that come with being a Guardian home for a breeding dog including but not limited to providing a safe and loving environment for the dog, continuing with training and socialization of the dog, providing regular veterinary care with a veterinarian agreed upon with the breeder, keeping up with regular grooming appointments, feeding a quality diet, and delivering the dog to the breeder during specific times for breeding and whelping purposes. Some other things to keep in mind, are that puppies chosen to go into guardian homes are chosen by the breeder based on which puppies are the best fit for the breeding program. Guardian families do not choose the puppy, but may be offered a choice of multiple puppies that are a good match are available. While the puppy will live with and be raised by the family, once the puppy is an adult of breeding age and has passed specific health testing requirements, the dog will need to remain with the breeder while in heat, for a specific amount of time while pregnant, and while the puppies are being raised. Visiting with the breeder before the dog is ready to be bred should also be scheduled to help ensure the dog is comfortable, and maintains a loving relationship with the breeder.
Potential Guardian families for Moon Dream Cavaliers should live within an hour and a half drive of Kewaskum, WI to ensure the dog is able to have regular visits and vet care as required for the program. If you live in the area, and would like to be considered for the Guardian Program, or would like more information, please feel free to contact us. We anticipate our first puppies available for Guardian homes will arrive sometime in 2025 and will most likely be blenhiem puppies from our beautiful, sweet, Halo Rael. While we are mostly looking to place female puppies in Guardian homes, males that fit our program may be considered for a family that is the right fit. We look forward to expanding our Cavalier family and continuing to work on our breeding goals, while ensuring all our dogs live the life they deserve.
